Our Latin Thing Screening Wednesday 11/30
"Our Latin Thing" is one of those classic films (like "Wild Style," "The Harder They Come," etc.) that captures a place and time that can only be returned to in memory, and in original documents like these. Centered around an incendiary gig at one of promoter Ralph Mercado’s fantastically popular Thursday night jams at the Cheetah in New York in August 1971, the film documents the raw Nu Yorican Latin sound at its zenith. Starring certified legends including Willie Colon, Ray Barretto and “El Cantante” Hector Lavoe and directed by Oscar-winner Leon Gast (‘When We Were Kings’), the footage is spliced with atmospheric street scenes on rubbish-filled stoops and crumbling bodegas in Spanish Harlem.
To celebrate the film’s first official release on DVD by Strut / Fania, Shook and Strut present an exclusive London screening at La Bodeguita, a vibrant restaurant and venue in Elephant & Castle Shopping Centre, on Wednesday 30th November at 8.00pm. Come have some drinks, eat some rice & beans, and celebrate an essential cultural document.

Dennis Coffey To Be Honored At Detroit Music Awards, Performance With Mayer Hawthorne
It feels really great to see deserving people get their due, and it's difficult to think of many people more deserving of recognition when it comes to Detroit music than Dennis Coffey. On April 15th, the day before Record Store Day, The Detroit Music Awards will be honoring Dennis with a Distinguished Achievement Award. He'll be joined on stage by Mayer Hawthorne, to perform the track "All Your Goodies Are Gone," which appears on the new album. Dennis is also nominated for the video for his cover of Cee-Lo's "F**k You," which features a host of notable Detroit folks. If you're in the area, you can catch the show at The Fillmore Theater.

Breakestra European Summer Tour Dates
Breakestra returned in 2009 with their long-awaited sophomore set exploring all colours of the funk spectrum. Built around the vision of “Music Man” Miles and Mixmaster Wolf (as well as producing, recording and writing the tracks, Miles performs bass, drums, guitars, cello, keys, percussion and vocals on the record), the trademark Breakestra touche remained intact: Wolf fronted tough breakbeat jams ‘Dark Clouds Rain Soul’ and Stones Throw single ‘Low Down Stank’; Miles himself brought his soulful vocals to ‘Need A Little Love’ and ‘I Don’t Wanna Wait’ and amazing new female vocalist Afrodyete recalled the heyday of JB’s Funky People on the terrific ‘Come On Over’.
Now you can join Breakestra on their Summer Tour 2010!

Horse Meat Disco Are Baaaaaack!!
We had so much fun on the last Horse Meat Disco mix that you know we had to do it again! If you can't make it to their legendary weekly London gig (and we highly suggest you make it a priority) this is the closest you can get to the balls out disco insanity you're guaranteed to encounter there. These guys have the record knowledge to put many disco obsessives to shame, yet manage to sidestep the dry and joyless collector scene in favor of a party that gets to the heart of the original disco spirit. Check out a short promo mix and the tracklist for the album below. Horse Meat Disco II will be out June 22nd.

Black Rio Vol. 2 launch party
Friday 24th July - Batmacumba: Black Rio 2 Launch Party
Live on-stage: London School Of Samba + guest deejays + exclusive early evening film showing Notting Hill Arts Club /21 Notting Hill Gate/ 7-2am / free before 8pm
This is our big summer party as Batmacumba hosts the launch party for Black Rio 2 the new compilation by DJ Cliffy. In the 7 years since DJ Cliffy compliled the first instalment of Black Rio he has dug even deeper in record shops and flea markets across Brazil to put together the second instalment - 18 seriously funky and obscure tropical soul and funk tracks. Apart from showcasing some of the music on the night their will be a chance to win copies of the album.
To celebrate the launch of the album Strut Records and Batmacumba have joined forces to put on a riotous launch party with live music from London School of Samba, the UK's premiere samba school featuring over a dozen drummers and dancers, creating carnival chaos live on-stage. DJ Cliffy is joined on the decks by Strut Records head-honcho Quinton Scott with a sensational summer mix of tropical Brazilian sounds.
Early in the evening (7-9pm) there will be an exclusive presentation of the new documentary about the life of Wilson Simonal entitled 'Ninguém Sabe o Duro que Dei'. During the 1960's Wilson Simonal was Brazilian most successful singer, his weekly tv show commanded huge audiences and record sales to match; he was also black. In the late Sixties a whispering campagin linked him to the then dictatorship and his career came to a sudden halt. This new film explores the controversy surrounding his demise.
