Ebo Taylor To Release New Solo Album On Strut
There's clearly a ground swell happening around African music right now. If you had told us fifteen years ago that not only would musicians like Tony Allen and Mulatu Astatke be performing to enthusiastic crowds worldwide, but that we would be fortunate enough to release brand new material from them on Strut, we might not have believed you. But somehow that seems to be the way it has worked out, and it is with pleasure that we announce that Ghana's Ebo Taylor is joining the ranks of legendary African musicians releasing new material with Strut. Love And Death (his first international solo release in over 20 years!) was recorded with the German outfit Afrobeat Academy, a Berlin-based collective featuring members of Poets Of Rhythm, Kabu Kabu (Jimi Tenor collaborators) and Ghanaian legends Marijata. It's an incredible recording; evidence that Taylor is still smouldering, and we're honored to present it to you. Love And Death will be out this Fall, with Taylor hitting the road with Afrobeat Academy towards the end of the year.

Danny Krivit Reunites With Strut For Edits By Mr. K Volume 2
It is with great excitement that we announce that we'll be continuing our relationship with one of NYC's godfather DJs, Danny Krivit. A Mr. K edit is a special thing, a piece of art. I still hear tracks from the first Mr. K Edits edition popping up in DJ sets in the city on a practically monthly basis. The man just has the magic touch. And with tracks from The Jackson 5, Patrice Rushen, Fatback Band, Chairmen of the Board & others getting the treatment, you know these are going to have some staying power. Look for Edits By Mr. K Vol. 2 everywhere on September 14th, and if you're in NYC, come party with us at the legendary 718 Sessions at Santo's Party House on September 12th.

Dr. Lloyd Miller Shows You The Instruments Used On His Heliocentrics Collaboration
Lloyd Miller is a pretty fascinating guy, and it's a pleasure to get to see him enumerate and explain some of the instruments he used for his collaborative album with The Heliocentrics. It's hard to imagine finding the time to learn all of these different instruments, but they definitely make for a uniquely textured album. We also shot an interview w/ Lloyd going into his rich history, including a near performance at Woodstock! Look for that here in the next couple of weeks. "Lloyd Miller and the Heliocentrics" will be out at the beginning of August.

Next Stop Soweto ... Vol 3
Strut conclude their essential three-part excursion into the archives of South African music... Volume 3 is a long overdue retrospective of the rich jazz scene happening in South Africa! The album features many of the recognized South African jazz greats like saxophonist Dudu Pukwana and drummer Early Mabuza, the potent soul jazz grooves of The Heshoo Beshoo Group and The Drive and some of the many artists creating unique fusions like Philip Tabane's Malombo mixing African drums and hand percussion with guitar, vocal and flute. This is important music, a defiant statement in the face of unimaginable cultural repression.
The Heliocentrics Set A Date With The Doctor
This whole business of setting up collaborative projects with two artists whose work you respect is pretty exciting. We were so blown away by the results of The Heliocentrics' work with Mulatu Astatke that when the chance came up for them to make a record with Lloyd Miller, we couldn't let it get by. For those not knowing, Dr. Lloyd Miller is a legendary musician & ethno-musicologist with a deep love and respect for jazz and middle eastern music. His music has been compiled recently by discerning folks such as Jazzman & Now Again, and in fact a recent exchange between Lloyd and Now Again's Egon recently made the rounds on the internet, thanks to Miller's frank condemnation of popular culture. He may be outspoken, but his words come from a place respect for the music he takes so seriously. We're extremley pleased to be able to set up a project with musicians who compliment each other so nicely. Lloyd Miller & The Heliocentrics will be out July 20th.

Walter Gibbons' Own Brand of Jungle Music
Considering Walter Gibbons' influence on disco, hip-hop, turntablism, the art of the remix, and dance music as a whole, it's surprising that he remains relatively unheralded. He was among the first to make his own reel to reel edits of tracks, extending breaks and restructuring tracks specifically for the dancefloor. As a direct result, he was the first DJ to be granted access to multi-track tapes as Ken Cayre’s Salsoul Records brought him in to re-work Double Exposure’s "Ten Percent" in ‘76, a mix that would set the blueprint for disco, the 12” format and all future dance music mixes. We're extremely excited to offer the first multi-label retrospective of his work, including a couple of really exciting unreleased bit & bobs. Specifically, Jungle Music contains a previously un-heard mix of Dinosaur L's classic "Go Bang." Exciting stuff! The full compilation will be out July 20th on double CD and digital download. We can't wait!

Mahotella Queens Chastise You Hippies!
On Volume 1 of Next Stop... Soweto, we focused on traditional South African music. The second volume treads into the fusion of these sounds with western funk, soul, psych & more. Below, find a track from the powerhouse group Mahotella Queens (whose sublime "Zway Kumusha" is one of the highlights of Volume 1), who according to the album's liner notes, were pressured into a more contemporary direction by their label. Not ones to bend over easily though, the track (the title of which translates to "Come On, Hippies") calls out South African youth for leaving behind the values of their parents. What's more timeless than letting the young whippersnappers have a piece of your mind? And over a track like this, we certainly can't complain. Volume 2 of Next Stop... Soweto is out May 11th.

Next Stop... Soweto 2 Preview
Moving away just a little bit from some of the more traditional sounds on Volume 1, Next Stop... Soweto 2 delves into some of the funky, soulful & psychedelic hybrids concocted by adventurous South African musicians in the late 60's and early 70's. It's pretty much as amazing as it sounds, and a fantastic accompaniment to the rapidly improving weather. Volume 2 will be out the second week in May, with Volume 3 on the way soon after.

Mulatu Elaborates On The Tracks On Mulatu Steps Ahead
The title of Mulatu Astatke's album Mulatu Steps Ahead isn't just a nod to his jazz roots, it's also an acknowledgment of the fact that his music has been slowly evolving since the late 60's and early 70's output for which he remains most known. A collaboration with musicians of varying ages and nationalities, his first solo album in over 20 years refines his singular musical vision and builds upon the foundation he has laid in his storied career. In this video, Astatke explains the intent and process involved in different tracks on the album. Mulatu Steps Ahead is out now!

Hear "Green Africa" from Mulatu Steps Ahead
It goes without saying that Mulatu Astatke is one of our musical heroes here at Strut. It's been an honor to work with him on the Inspiration Information and New York - Addis - London projects, and the response we've gotten has been overwhelming. We're proud to be releasing his first solo album in over 20 years this March, and pleased to present some of the first audio from the project for your listening enjoyment. Listen to Green Africa from Mulatu Steps Ahead, and imagine how soon March 30th is coming!

Grab A Special Non-Album Bonus Track From Afro-Rock
Much of the current availability of mind bending and obscure African music from the 60's and 70's can be traced back to Duncan Brooker's long out of print 2001 compilation, which we're happy to say that we're re-issuing this month. What's more, we're extra excited to offer this bonus track which didn't make the album. The Latapaza Band's "Odi-You" is a heavenly slice of African funk which opens with a crisp drum and conga break. Grab the track HERE and make sure to pick up Afro Rock Volume 1 when it drops next week.
Look & Listen: Next Stop... Soweto
I probably don't have to say how much pride Strut takes in assembling packaging and liner notes for our releases that reflect the quality of the music, and offer some insight into the time and place it was recorded. That said, we're especially proud of the notes for Next Stop... Soweto, and we wanted to share some of these fantastic images. Check out a short clip featuring music from the album, and a sample of some of the photos in the liner notes. It'll brighten your day, guaranteed.
