Free Download: Sorie Kondi – The Freetown Tapes (Mixed By Chief Boima)

In 2006, blind kondi (thumb piano) player Sorie Kondi was surviving by busking on the streets of Freetown, Sierra Leone, abandoned by relatives and friends who had fled the rebel takeover of the city in the late ‘90s. Demos for his debut studio album had also been lost during that time. His sound was marked by his electrified Kondi, run through a small distorted amplifier that he carried on his back whilst performing on the street.

Since then, Sorie has recorded and finished five albums in total in Freetown, using whatever means available to him, culminating in the ‘Without Money No Family’ album, which happened to catch the ear of US producer / DJ Chief Boima (also of Sierra Leonean descent) after chancing upon a YouTube link.

The two joined forces as Kondi Band, combining Sorie Kondi’s traditionalist performances with Boima’s globally-informed electronic production. The duo released an EP this year on Strut, recently performed acclaimed sets to thousands at Transmusicales and Womex, and have received accolades from tastemakers including Gilles Peterson, leading to a recent takeover of Worldwide FM by Boima. With a Kondi Band album, ‘Salone’, coming in 2017, Boima has created a free mix to showcase Kondi’s incredible history.

As well as collecting songs from across Sorie Kondi’s recorded music career, this mix also includes one original and two remixes of songs from the forthcoming debut Kondi Band album. The mix is available now for free download on the Kondi Band Bandcamp.

Keep up with Kondi band on Facebook as they tour and prepare to release their debut album.

Boom! Direct From Peru’s Dancefloors…

TGM005“Our music is dark and psychedelic but it also has that party spirit.”Dengue Dengue Dengue

We’re heading back to the melting pot of Peru’s capital Lima as we join forces with the excellent Tiger’s Milk label for a new compilation, Peru Boom! Guided by the roots of chicha and Peruvian cumbia and inspired by Western dubstep, techno, grime and rave, a whole new generation of producers have created their own fresh new tropical bass fusions which have taken over the city and have united communities.

“When we started parties four years ago,” explains Rafael Pereira of Dengue Dengue Dengue, “we’d get people from all over Lima: the white guy, the back guy, the poor guy, the rich guy. Now there are many parties and everyone goes to their own place in different neighbourhoods.” Peru Boom! gives the wider world the first chance to sample this unique scene with tracks from DJ Chakruna, Deltatron, Tribilin Sound, Dengue Dengue Dengue and more.

The album is available now via Tigers Milk / Strut Records on CD, LP, & digital formats. Stream Rolovo’s “Outropical” below.

View Peru Through The Eyes Of Young Skaters In Kanaku Y El Tigre’s New Video

Kanaku Y El Tigre’s new single “Si Te Mueres Mañana” is a life-affirming anthem with the message “If you die tomorrow, make sure you you’ve done everything you ever wanted.” After watching the song’s gorgeously-shot video (which premiered today on The Wall Street Journal), we might have to add skateboarding through the hills of Lima, Peru to the list of things to do before we die.

“Si Te Mueres Mañana” appears on Kanaku Y El Tigre’s forthcoming album Quema Quema Quema, which is the first internationally-released project from the Peruvian duo of Nico Saba and Bruno Bellatin. With a relaxed sound that bridges folk, indie rock, psychedelic music and electronics, the album is a perfect soundtrack to the spring. If you missed it, you can download the advance teaser track “Bubucelas” for free.

Quema Quema Quema is out June 15th on Strut / Tiger’s Milk. Pre-orders are available now on iTunes and the Strut Store.

Get To Know Peruvian Psychedelic Folk Collective Kanaku Y El Tigre

kanaku3 Strut in association with Tiger’s Milk proudly present the latest artist signing to the label: Lima, Peru’s Kanaku Y El Tigre.

The band’s forthcoming album Quema Quema Quema (meaning ‘Burn Burn Burn’ in Spanish) is the product of two years honing the Kanaku sound at the band’s Lima studio HQ and the result is a record which is feverish in intensity and which screams with joy and cries for help in the same breath. The album is a testament to their new found approach with its euphoric, unapologetically feel-good hooks littered with electronic jitters, ghostly delays, serene Hawaiian slide guitars and a chorus of other-wordly vocal harmonies.

Take a look at a video for the track “Bubucelas,” featuring the album’s incredible hand-painted cover art, below. You can also download “Bubucelas” for free.

Quema Quema Quema is out June 15th on Strut / Tiger’s Milk. Pre-orders are available now on iTunes.

Brenmar’s Chicago Mix Features Dance Mania Classics

brenmar-history-of-chicago-mix-11.12.2013Brenmar is one of the members of today’s vanguard of electronic music who makes sure to represent Chicago to the fullest. Though he’s currently based in Brooklyn, his Chicago roots show clearly in his productions, mixes and collaborations. He’s worked with DJ Rashad, remixed a DJ Deeon classic, and his mixes and live sets are heavy on Chicago sounds, from house to footwork to the drill rap scene.

On his latest mix for FACT, Brenmar traces the evolution of Chicago electronic music, and of course there’s a healthy portion of classics from the Dance Mania camp. The whole mix is a fantastic listen. Turn it up, and jack your big booty.

Our Dance Mania retrospective Hardcore Traxx will be available February 11th 2014.

Metal Dance 2 Video Mix

One of the distinguishing qualities of Trevor Jackson’s Metal Dance series is its visual aesthetic. Jackson’s work as a graphic designer plays as much part as his role as compiler, and a stark black and white visual identity has become a trademark of the series

In this new video mix edited by Tom Parsons, bleak and striking images float over a selection of tracks that will be featured on Metal Dance 2, which is out now!

Live Recording: Alessio Natalizia’s Mutazione DJ Set

When we first shared the news that Alessio Natalizia would be performing a special Mutazione-themed DJ set for Club To Club’s launch at London’s Village Underground, the natural fan response was to ask if the set would be recorded. That sounded like a pretty good idea to us too, and Alessio was kind enough to record his performance, and to share it with us.

So here, for your pleasure, is one of the most uncompromising DJ sets we’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying, digging deep into his cache of Italian post-punk, new wave, and experimental electronic music. Some of the tracks you may recognize from the Mutazione collection Alessio compiled. Others, well, let’s just say it’s clear that there’s no short supply of mind blowing music in his stash.

File Sharing In The 1980s With Italy’s TRAX Collective

Music from Italy’s TRAX collective are among the many highlights of Alessio Natalizia’s incredible Mutazione collection. While researching the work of the collective, we were struck by the way in which their creative approach in the early 1980s mirrored key elements of online and internet culture of the 2000s. In very literal ways, the TRAX guys were sharing files, creating social networks, and crowd-sourcing content 30 years before Tumblr, Facebook, Soundcloud or any of the other many great tools that make this kind of thing common place these days.

We were able to catch up with two of the founding members of TRAX, who graciously gave us more detail on their creative process, and the incredible music they made together which has spanned decades and continents. You can hear music from them and other members of the Italian New Wave movement on Mutazione, which is out now.

Alessio Natalizia of WALLS Compiles Rare Italian Electronic & New Wave On Mutazione

Our latest compilation project explores the under-acknowledged realm of Italian underground electronic music and new wave, recorded during a time of extreme political turmoil during the 80s. “When people think of Italian music, they often think of Italo disco or prog rock,” explains compiler Alessio Natalizia of the Kompakt outfit WALLS. “For me, this more experimental end of the new wave scene is the most exciting music to emerge from Italy over the last 30 years and, since much of it was originally released in such limited quantities, it has remained relatively undocumented until now.”

In fact, much of the music covered on Mutazione was originally released only on cassette, sometimes in conjunction with fanzines published by political groups whose message was entwined with the music. Stylistically, the music ranges from brooding new wave and post-punk to raw electronic pieces and claustrophobic, whispered vocal cuts. This is some of the most adventurous electronic music we’ve collected so far on Strut, and an amazing overview of a unique time and aesthetic that has yet to be fully canonized.

Mutazione CDs and LPs will include extensive sleeve notes by two of Italy’s leading music and cultural journalists, Andrea Pomini and Alberto Campo, both now of Rumore magazine. The package also features a wealth of original photos alongside artwork from fanzines, cassettes and LP covers. The collection will be release August 6th on 2 x CD, 2 x LP & digital download.
