Souljazz Orchestra Share New Track & World Tour Dates

Ottawa’s Souljazz Orchestra does not mess around. One look at the band’s rigorous tour schedule makes it clear that this is a group of musicians on a mission. The super-group’s dedication shines through the music as well of course, a distillation of a variety of Latin & African styles with a solid vocabulary of funk, soul and jazz. Check out the new track “Cartão Postal” which fuses Brazilian samba with Angolan semba, with lyrics (in Portuguese, of course) contrasting the generic “post-card” conception of the Tropics with the reality of poverty that pervades many of these idealized areas. The band’s new album Solidarity will be out September 18th. For further information on these tour dates, visit the band’s site.

Sofrito Are Back With International Soundclash!

We couldn’t be happier to have a new collection of incredible music on the way from the expert selectors in Sofrito. And with a release date in late July, International Soundclash will come at a perfect time to add some extra heat to the summer.

Hugo Mendez and Frankie Francis have dug incredibly deep to bring you a one-of-a-kind selection of music from Trinidad, Colombia, Dominica, Congo, Cameroun and beyond. Exclusives include the deep Pacifico sound of Grupo Canalon’s “La Zorra y El Perol” – a new project from Nidia Góngora, singer with Quantic’s Combo Barbaro – a previously unreleased track by UK/Kenyan sensations Owiny Sigoma Band, and a Tropical Treats edit of Haiti’s dynamite Les Difficiles de Petion-Ville.

We also have a really special piece of packaging, courtesy of visual maestro Lewis Heriz, who interprets Sofrito’s fresh perspective on the world with a specially designed cut-out globe on a pull-out poster to accompany the CD and Double LP. Sofrito International Soundclash will be available July 24th 2012.

Record Store Day Release: Funky UK Psych From Ugly Custard

If you’re anything like us, you’re a big fan of Record Store Day. Now in it’s fifth year, the April date is a special time to get all sorts of exclusive, vinyl-only, limited-edition stuff that record geeks sweat over. Last year we offered a 500-run 7″ single from Dennis Coffey, featuring an exclusive Steinski remix.

This year, we’re serving up a full album worth of heavy psychedelic funk, in the form of the rare self-titled Ugly Custard LP. Originally released in 1971, the album has become a cult classic among vinyl diggers – a dense, heavy, psyched-out set from a short-lived side project put together by UK library and film music composer, Alan Parker (of KPM 1000 series fame). It also includes work from ace session players Herbie Flowers (bass) and Roger Coulam (organ) & Clem Cattini.

Check out the amazing “Custard’s Last Stand” for a taste, and look for the limited edition vinyl at participating stores on April 21st.

Trevor Jackson Digs Dance Floor Industrial Gems on Metal Dance

Trevor Jackson, known for his work as Playgroup and the incredibly influential Output Recordings, has the kind of crates that even hard core collectors envy. So when he came to us with the idea of collecting some of his favorite rarities from the under-explored world of 80s industrial & post-punk dance floor material, we couldn’t say no. Having already gotten into the groove with our Fac Dance collection of material from the legendary Factory label, we knew this would be something special. The two-disc collection covers recognized masters such as Cabaret Voltaire & Nitzer Ebb as well as names that we know are going to be new to quite a few listeners. If the term EBM (Electronic Body Music, coined by Kraftwerk’s Ralf Hütter) means anything to you, you’re in for a treat. If not, there’s a world waiting to be discovered…

New Anthology For Calypso Legend Mighty Sparrow Due In January

Truly a towering figure of calypso and Caribbean culture in general, Trinidad’s Mighty Sparrow is well in need of an in-depth anthology. In January, we’ll be releasing a two-disc collection spanning one of his most creative periods, the early 60’s through the mid-70’s. Sparrowmania! presents a picture of an incredible and prolific entertainer, offering on-point social commentary (“Kennedy And Krushchev,” “Ah Diggin’ Horrors,” “The Slave”), bawdy songs full of double entendre and vice (“Big Bamboo,” “Congo Man,” “What’s The Point Of Getting Sober”) and genre-expanding hybrids (“Try A Little Tenderness,” “Calypso Boogaloo”). Liner notes courtesy of David Katz provide context and history, and the music speaks for itself.

Detroit Guitar Legend Dennis Coffey Joins Strut For A New Album

It is with great pleasure that we have the opportunity to announce that legendary guitarist Dennis Coffey will be releasing his new album on Strut. We’ve been working really closely with Dennis on the project, and can safely say that fans of his wah-wah and breakbeat laden solo material, as well as his pioneering work backing folks like The Temptations, Parliament, Edwin Starr & more will be delighted with what they hear.
One of the really fun things about the project from a record collector’s standpoint is that about half of the material reaches back to classic soul songs on which Dennis first appeared, with guest vocal duties handled by a truly amazing array of musicians. Mayer Hawthorne croons over Parliament’s “All Your Goodies Are Gone” from their Up For The Down Stroke LP. Two more Detroit belters, The Dirtbombs’ Mick Collins and Rachel Nagy of The Detroit Cobras, join the party with another George Clinton related tune, Funkadelic’s “I’ll Bet You.” Paolo Nutini delivers a great adaption of “Only Good For Conversation,” from Rodriguez’s much loved Cold Fact album. Fanny Franklin from killer Hollywood funk combo Orgone voices a new version of Wilson Pickett’s psych-soul jam “Don’t Knock My Love” and Lisa Kekaula from California garage-soul band The Bellrays takes on the 100 Proof Aged In Soul stomper “Somebody’s Been Sleeping.”

For his new compositions on the album, Coffey revisits the uncompromising instrumental style he is renowned for. Milwaukee funk sensations Kings Go Forth (Luaka Bop) mould an intense funk jam around some heavy Coffey licks on ’Miss Millie.’ Album opener ’7th Galaxy’ echoes the hard guitar ’n’ breaks of his Detroit Guitar Band recordings for Sussex, ’Knockabout’ whips up an epic funky soundtrack groove and ’Space Traveller’ simmers on a sleazy, guitar-drenched, slo mo workout.
Dennis will be touring internationally to support the record, kicking things off with several appearances at SXSW (including some special guest sets that we’ll tell you about soon). We’re also planning an exclusive 7″ for Record Store Day, and some other fun celebrations for that event, so keep your eyes open for details.
“Dennis Coffey” will be out April 25th.
